Concerns Range Oceans worldwide. Habitat Coastal waters, bays, lagoons, and some rivers. Size Smallest: The tucuxi weighs about 50 kg (110 lb) and grows to about 1.2 m (4 ft) long. Largest: The killer whale weighs up to 5,500 kg (12,100 lb) and grows up to 9.8 m (32 ft) long. Feeding Habits Dolphins are carnivores; they eat mostly fish. They find their food by echolocation, emitting clicking sounds and observing how the sounds bounce off objects. Offspring Female dolphins give birth to one calf about every two years. Life Span 25 to 50 years and sometimes longer, depending on the species. Did You Know The bottlenose dolphin can detect sounds at frequencies more than seven times what a human can hear. The spinner dolphin spirals like a football when jumping from the water.
