Analysis of “Ariel”, ?Ariel?, Sylvia Plath
Introduction:
-Ariel is a poem in free verse with a simple narrative but has an underlying rich and complex message.
-The poem comprises 10 tercets and a final stanza composed of a single conclusive line.
-vivid description given by the speaker, presumably Plath, riding horseback, enjoying and deriving spiritual uplift from
the speed and the natural scenery. The description continues until a child’s cry is heard and the sun fully rises.
-The mood is of exhilaration and celebration of freedom. The word “horse” is never used even once. Instead, she
describes what is seen when riding Ariel. When riding something at high-speed, vision tends to blur; an elusive scenery
is evoked.
-Bibliographical context: Sylvia and Ted Hughes moved to Court Green, Devon, in 1961. The poem was written in 1962=>
Ariel’s landscape was informed by the countryside.

-name of Sylvia Plath’s horse. She would ride her horse at dawn before her children awoke.
-biblical allusion-> ‘Ariel’ in Hebrew translates to ‘the lion or lioness of God’ (directly referred to in line 4.) A lion is a
symbol of authority and strength. Sylvia Plath had an interest in Judaism and identified with the suffering of the Jewish
people.

to achieve the best of confessional poetry by taking away physical barriers and entering an ethereal journey.
-contrast “darkness” (l.1)/” substanceless blue” (l.2)
-contrast/evolution from “stasis” (l.1) (a state of stillness or inactivity) to explosion through high-speed (“hauls me
through the air” l.16) + the ve...
