Austrian Writer Birth July 3, 1883 Death June 3, 1924 Place of Prague, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic) Birth Known for Dreamlike stories that evoke a sense of anxiety and alienation often associated with modern life Milestones 1906 Received his law degree 1907-1922 Worked in the insurance industry 1915 Published The Metamorphosis, the story of a man who wakes up and discovers he has become an insect 1917 Was diagnosed with tuberculosis, the eventual cause of his death 1919 Published the short story 'In the Penal Colony' 1923 Moved to Berlin 1925 The Trial was published posthumously. 1926 The Castle, the story of a man's frustrated search for recognition by governing authorities, was published posthumously. Did You One of Kafka's favorite books was a biography of Benjamin Franklin. Know Kafka requested that his unpublished works, including The Trial and The Castle, be destroyed after his death. His friend, Austrian writer Max Brod, published them instead. Although Kafka lived in his father's home for most of his life, experts on his writings have found the theme of a rejecting father in much of his work.
