(Peace) Greek Daughter of Aphrodite
and Ares; wife of Cadmus, king of Thebes. All the
Olympian Gods attended the wedding of Harmonia
and Cadmus. The gods blessed Harmonia with many
gifts, including a golden necklace from Aphrodite,
made by the smith-god, Hephaestus. The necklace
had the power of giving unfading beauty to its wearer,
but it would also bring misfortune in the later history
of Thebes (see Eriphyle and Seven Against Thebes).
While Harmonia, which means "peace," may
seem a strange name for a daughter born of Aphrodite,
the goddess of love, and Ares, the god of war,
some scholars note that then, as now, more than
usual affection and therefore harmony are generated
among people in times of stress such as war.
The children of Cadmus and Harmonia were daughters
Ino, Agave, and Semele, and Polydorus, a son.
