Religion was propagated by empire and cut across empire. From crusades through missionaries to Islamic expansions ( pilgrimage and islams scholar training). Religion had ambiguous relation with empires. We can cite the movement of people, slave trade and forced labors , and those sailors and mobile workers and intellectuals that contributed to imperials expansion
