Fraction. Fraction, a number, such as ? or ? , that is not a whole number but that is formed by dividing one quantity by another. The top number of a fraction is called the numerator, while the bottom number is called the denominator. Fractions represent portions of a whole. If you cut an apple into four equal pieces and then eat one piece, for example, the fraction ? describes the uneaten portion of the apple: You still have three out of a total of four pieces.
