John Quincy Adams - Biography. 6th president of the United States Birth July 11, 1767 Death February 23, 1848 Home State Massachusetts Party Democratic-Republican Term In Office 1825-1829 Vice President John C. Calhoun Significant Acts Proposed several national improvement projects, including transportation systems, a national university, and an observatory. Signed the bill known as the 'tariff of abominations,' which set high duties on materials and manufactured goods. Career 1781 Assisted the minister to Russia as secretary and interpreter. 1794 Appointed minister to the Netherlands. 1796 Appointed by his father as minister to Prussia. 1803-1808 Served as U.S. senator from Massachusetts. 1809-1814 Served as minister to Russia. 1814 Negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. 1815-1817 Served as minister to Great Britain. 1817 Appointed secretary of state by James Madison. 1824-1829 President of the United States. 1831-1848 Represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives. Did You Know At the age of 14, Adams served as secretary and interpreter to the United States envoy to Russia. No candidate won a majority of electoral votes in the election of 1824--Adams was elected by the House of Representatives. John Quincy Adams and his father, John Adams, were the first parent and child who both served as U.S. president.
