Toni Morrison - biography. American novelist and essayist Birth February 18, 1931 Place of Lorain, Ohio Birth Known for Exploring the black experience through artful and poetic storytelling Winning the 1993 Nobel Prize in literature, becoming the first African American woman to do so Milestones 1953 Graduated from Howard University; received an M.A. degree from Cornell University in 1955 1955-1964 Taught English at Texas Southern University and Howard University Mid-1960s Worked as an editor at Random House in New York City 1970 Published her first novel, The Bluest Eye, the story of a young black girl's desire to have blue eyes 1973 Published Sula, the story of the bond between two black women growing up in Medallion, Ohio 1977 Published the critically acclaimed and best-selling novel Song of Solomon 1981 Published the novel Tar Baby, a complicated love story set in the West Indies 1987 Published Beloved, a powerful story of a former slave who kills her daughter rather than allow the child to experience slavery, and is then haunted by the child's spirit 1988 Won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for the novel Beloved (1987) 1992 Published the novel Jazz and a collection of essays, Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination 1998 Published the novel Paradise, a story set in the all-black community of Ruby, Oklahoma Did You Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford.
