The Equalizer The Equalizer is a 2014 american action/thriller movie directed by Antoine Fouqua and written by Richard Wenk. This movie is a adaptation of the TV serie Equalizer broadcast on CBS from 1985 to 1989. Main Actors: - Denzel Washington (Main actor): Robert McCall - Chloë Grace Moretz: Alina / Teri - Marton Csokas: Teddy / Nikolaï Itchenko Summary As usual, Fuqua takes great care to place his characters in a universe before to tackle accelerate the pace of the film. We discover Robert McCall, a simple worker for a DIY store, a generous and altruistic man, but who seems to have two faces as his habits recall those of a rigorous military training. And it is his altruistic side that will take her to meet the young Teri, a young prostitute who only dreams to live a better life. And on the day when she is being severely reprimanded by her employers, McCall reveals his true face. The film thus takes another turn. We discover a highly skilled killer on the court. Calculating each of his actions to the near second, McCall appears to be the guardian angel of Boston. Fuqua films the scenes of action in a very appreciable way. The fights are filmed with a certain fluidity, the pace is sustained until the last second, and McCall shows a (very) great violence. A much more intense violence than in other films of the type. The film remains a film of justicier. There are amazing and ingenious action scenes, some of which look like scenes from the movies "Mom I missed the plane but adult version" and gorgeous idle effects under a music to make you shiver. In addition, the staging is very neat. Nothing but the first action scene is worth all the gold in the world. Our excerpt ! A sequence where the camera fits in the eye of our hero and where time slows down to show us how Robert prepares his plan of attack. The film begins in the style of the film "Léon" and then in the second part, we approach the movie of superhero "without the costume". It is not a film that enchains action and special effects. There is a very beautiful psychology of our main character who is haunted by his past. In a way, he gives this last battle to save his soul. Psychology of McCall: At the beginning of the film which starts calmly, Robert McCall has a simple and routine life. He works in an hardware store where he is very appreciated by these colleagues. In everyday life, he stopwatch himself and repeats the same meticulous gestures. On the side of his personality, Robert seems to hide something. At robert's home, we sees in his eyes a great and deep sadness, a great suffering. But out of his house, he doesn't show this sadness. He is a smiling, kind, generous man, ready to be helpful to any person in need, funny, a little philosopher. Nevertheless, in the film, nothing is known about his past life. He is a very mysterious character who will unveil another facet of his personality in the continuation of the film. Was he a secret agent? Agent of CIA? We doesn't know anything but we get answers on other things. The director has already succeeded a very beautiful thing: we attach very quickly to our hero who under his themes as an unstoppable judge, hides a man fragile emotionally. Fortunately, he tries to override and take on him and dialogues speed by high speed and gives a very comical side to some scenes. Explication of the scene : McCall looks at the card that Slavi gave him. He goes to an area above a restaurant where Slavi and his men are meeting. McCall enters with an envelope containing $9,800 for Alina's freedom. At first, the goons laugh at McCall, though Slavi says that the money would be good to keep Alina for one month. McCall takes the money back and starts to walk out. He almost leaves but then decides to stay and lock the door. After carefully observing the men and whatever weapons they may be holding, he sets the timer on his watch. One of the men aims his gun at McCall, but he grabs the man's arm and causes him to shoot Slavi in the throat. He then jabs a shot glass into that man's eye. He stabs the third man, and then gets a corkscrew and repeatedly stabs Tevi until he sticks it under his chin and finishes him off. McCall goes to Slavi's side and watches him slowly die. In this extract,Robert McCall feels no emotion, he is unfazed and feels no pity. The Camera: The start of the scene is filmed in a large plan and after there are zoom on the item of the room which McCall will can use to kill the people il the room. low-angle shot → This framing gives a certain impression of power and domination of the subject. zoom: The camera zoom on the eyes of McCall, there is a play with his eyes. We see the reflection of the room in his eyes. Success and criticism: The film received mixed reviews from critics, who highly praised the visual style, acting, soundtrack and action sequences but criticized its violence, script and plot. Nonetheless, it became a commercial success with a worldwide box office gross of over $192 million. A sequel has been confirmed, with Washington reprising his role.
