This text is an except of "Secret Doughter" by Shilpi SOMAYA GOWDA. The idea for her first novel is due to her work in an Indian orphanage. Her novel was translated into 19 languages. In his text, there are 3 different characters: Kavita, her husband Jasu and the midwife. We can see also the presence of Kavita's newborn in the room where the scene take place and the name of Kavita's sister, Rupa in the text. The paratext we means that the scene takes place in an abandoned hut. We don't know in which country but since we study about India, we can deduce that the country is India. We see that Kavita birth in an abandoned hut : explicitly, if she birth in an abandoned hut, she's probably poor. The first sentence introduces already the tone of the atmosphere ("No one heard my prayers"); This sentence allows to understand that will arrive something terrible in continuation of this text. In the beginning, we can see the distress of ...

« a girl and need a boy to help us in the fields (“we can’t keep this baby.

We need a boy to help us in the fields.

[…] we can hardly afford one child […].

My cousin’s daughter is […] still not married, […] can’t come up with the dowry.

We are not a rich family, Kativa.”). Kativa, knows all Jasu says, but is not possible to her to oblige her child, not again.

It’s not the first time that her child is take away from her.

It’s already happened.

It’s unbearable, impossible, she can’t give her own girl.

She can’t believe she should to abandon her, can’t keep her.

Kativa is upset, she cry, shakes her head, she’s breathtaking (“eyes fill again with tears”, “shakes her head”, “breath becomes ragged”, “several breaths”, “I won’t.

If you try, if you even try, you will have to kill me first”). Jasu try to persuad Kativa because he knows it’s not possible to keep their child.

Even if they want.

If they do this, their child become a burden to us, a drain on our family.

We can thinks Jasu desn’t understand the reaction of Kavita, but on my own, I think he has no choice to react otherwise.

At the end, Kavita ask to Jasu to give her one night with her and after, he can come fetch her away.

If I should to imagine what will happen, I think Jasu says no to Kavita and takes the baby.

So, Kavita cries and tries to pick up her child but she doesn’t arrive.

But I prefer to imagine that Jasu says okey to his wife and she can to have her child for just one night, to makes herself farewell.

But after this night, a man take away the child.

Ican’t thinks that they keep her, because it’s not possible, they are too poor to do that.

And also because I cognize the story and I know that the child will be adopted by a doctor later.

So, effectively, they don’t keep their little girl.. »
