Book Report Jake's Tower by Elizabeth Laird Jake's Tower is an emotional, intriguing and heart-rending story about a young 12 year old school boy who is being abused violently by his step father Steve. It was heart breaking to read about a helpless boy being beaten up by someone twice his size. Elizabeth Laird has captured every moment of the book and described them with such feeling and intensity that I could picture every scene in my head. The story is set in modern times. Young Ja...

« real father. Jake is an adventurous young boy, who is also timid but clever. He   appreciates everything that is given to him.

When his long lost grandmother,   Mrs   Judd,   offered   both   him  and   his   mum   a   roof   over   their   heads   he   did   not   take   that   for   granted.

Mrs   Judd   is   a   very   generous   and   loving   person,   who   won't let anybody get in her way. Marie, is a strong willed woman who would   do anything for her son. We are not told much about Danny as he was never   a   part   of   Jake's   life   up   until   the   moment   he   came   home   to   Mrs   Judd's   to   discover   a   young     lad   sitting   there   in   Danny's   chair   staring   back   at   his   new   found father.      As Jake grows further  apart  from the horrid Steve, he grows stronger  and   has  more  faith in what   he  does,   for example  he  stops being  afraid  of   bullies   and becomes less timid.    The author chose to write in the first person which always seems to help me   visualise   the   action.

This   also   means   that   the   attitudes   and   the   feelings   of   each   and   every   one   of   the   character   was   described   in   depth.

My   favourite   moment in the book was when Marie and Jake decide to pack up their bags   and leave their old, messy apartment and Steve behind them, to then go and   find happiness. . »
