This painting is only one of Van Gogh's evocations of a southern night lit by a starry sky. The sky glows behind the darkened houses whilst in the foreground is the brilliantly-lit terrace of the local cafe with lamps, tables and chairs and people seated at the far end enjoying the warm night.
