THE COLD WAR
In 1947, Soviets and Americans had very different ideologies (geopolitical,
economic, and military).
Because of this, they had a lot of indirect military
conflicts, that could have destruct the planet.
It was The Cold War.
In 1945, the Allies divided Germany and Berlin into four areas of
occupation (the Allies area and the Soviets area).
Soviets and Americans
began to damage their relations and Stalin used this opportunity to take
control of Berlin.
He created the blockade of West Berlin.
The next day the
United States of America provided supplies to West Berlin with airlift, that
pushed Stalin to lift this blockade in May 1949.
Due to this decision,
Germany was divided in two parts : the Federal Republic of Germany at
the west and the German Democratic Republic at the east.
In the beginning of the 1960's, the Soviets strengthened the inner
German border, a small part of the iron curtain and in 1961, the Berlin
Wall was created to stop the migrations of Germans from East to West
Germany.
This wall surrounded West Berlin, and imprisoned a big part of
the Berlin’s population.
When Gorbatchev became USSR's president, he improved his relations
with the Western Block, and he installed a communist politic more
tolerant in the Western Block’s countries.
The 9 th of November 1989, the
Berlin Wall was destroyed, the two Germany were reunified and The Cold
War was finished.
The antagonism between the USA and the USSR, from 1947 to 1962
(the Korean War, Berlin's crisis and the blockade of Berlin) risked the
planet's destruction.
Berlin was the symbol of Germany’s division in two
parts, also Europe's tensions and the Cold War.
