Offspring Female axolotls lay about 400 eggs, which hatch after about 2.5 weeks. Newborn young remain attached to plants for another two weeks. Life Span Up to 50 years. Did You Know Axolotl is a Nahuatl word meaning 'water doll.' Axolotls are frequently born as albinos. Most axolotls remain in the larval stage, retaining their gills for their entire lives.
