Caribou. Concerns Range North America. Habitat Arctic tundra, forests, and mountainous regions. Size Height: 87 to 140 cm (34 to 55 in) at the shoulder Weight: 60 to 318 kg (130 to 700 lb). Feeding Habits Caribou are herbivores; they eat lichens, grasses, shrubs, mushrooms, and roots. They often find food by scraping under snow with their hooves and antlers. Offspring The female caribou typically gives birth to a single calf after a gestation period of seven to eight months. Life Span About 4.5 years in the wild. Did You Know Caribou in northern regions of Europe and Asia are called reindeer. Many caribou migrate in huge herds every year--sometimes as far as 5000 km (1900 mi).
