Range Central Africa. Habitat Tropical rain forests. Size Height: 1.0 to 1.7 m (3.3 to 5.6 ft) Weight: 26 to 70 kg (57 to 154 lb) Bonobos are slightly smaller than common chimpanzees. Feeding Habits Chimpanzees are omnivores; they eat fruit, nuts, leaves, honey, eggs, bark, insects, birds, and small mammals. Offspring Females usually give birth to one baby after a gestation of seven months. The young are weaned after about five years. Life Span About 50 years. Did You Know Chimpanzees are the animals most genetically similar to humans. Chimpanzees do not swim. Chimpanzees strip sticks and poke them into termite mounds to catch insects for food. Chimpanzees sleep in nests they build in trees. Chimpanzees usually travel on all fours on the ground, but they also swing from tree to tree.
