American molecular biologist Birth March 7, 1938 Place of New York, New York Birth Known for Discovering that some viruses reproduce by altering the genetic code in host cells, causing the cells to produce new virus particles Receiving the 1975 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, which he shared with Renato Dulbecco and Howard Temin Career 1968 Accepted a position as associate professor of microbiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; became a full professor in 1972 1970 Published an article on the discovery of reverse transcriptase, a viral enzyme that enables RNA to copy its genetic code into DNA 1984 Acted as director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Boston 1990 Became president of Rockefeller University 1997- Served as president of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Did You A scandal involving allegations of falsified data in a paper he coauthored forced Baltimore to resign from Rockefeller University in 1991.
