Irish-born British dramatist, literary critic, and novelist Birth July 26, 1856 Death November 2, 1950 Place of Birth Dublin, Ireland Principal London, England Residence Known For Using comedy to expose social evils, and exploring philosophical ideas in his plays Writing astute criticism of the arts, and maintaining extensive correspondence with many of the other public figures of his time Milestones 1876 Moved from Dublin to London 1880s Struggled to establish a literary career and joined the Fabian society, a middle-class socialist group committed to transformation of English government and society 1893 Published his first play, Widowers' Houses, which he described as an 'unpleasant' play 1895-1898 Worked for The Saturday Review as a drama critic 1898 Published the two-volume Plays, Pleasant and Unpleasant, which included Mrs. Warren's Profession, Candida, Arms and the Man, The Man of Destiny, and The Philanderer 1901 Published Three Plays for Puritans, a collection that included The Devil's Disciple, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Captain Brassbound's Conversion 1903 Published the play Man and Superman 1905 His satirical play Major Barbara was performed. 1913 His comedic play Pygmalion was performed. 1921 Published Back to Methuselah, a series of five related plays 1923 Saint Joan, a depiction of French heroine Joan of Arc, was performed. 1925 Won the Nobel Prize in literature Did You Know Shaw wrote more than 50 plays during his lifetime. Although Shaw accepted the 1925 Nobel Prize in literature, he refused the prize money, arranging instead for the money to go toward funding the translation of Swedish literature into English.
