Gila Monster. Class Reptilia Order Varanomorpha Family Helodermatidae Genus Heloderma Species suspectum Conservation At risk due to habitat destruction. Concerns Range Southwestern United States and Mexico. Habitat Underground burrows in arid and semi-arid areas. Size Length: 45 to 61cm (18 to 24 in). Weight: 0.5 to 1.4 kg (1 to 3 lb). Feeding Habits Gila monsters are carnivores; they eat rodents, birds, and the eggs of birds and reptiles. They typically hunt below ground, and sometimes subdue their prey with venom before eating it. Offspring The female Gila monster lays from 2 to 13 eggs in a hole in the ground. The young hatch from their eggs up to ten months later. Life Span About 20 years. Did You Know The Gila monster's only enemies are humans, coyotes, and birds of prey. The Gila monster and its relative, the Mexican beaded lizard, are the world's only venomous lizards. The Gila monster stores fat in its tail as a food reserve.
