Jerry Rice. Jerry Rice, born in 1962, American professional football player, who in 1995 became the National Football League (NFL) career record holder for most receiving yards, surpassing the mark of 14,004 yards set by James Lofton. Rice also holds the NFL records for the most career receptions and touchdowns. Jerry Lee Rice was born in Starkville, Mississippi. He became an All-American receiver at Mississippi Valley State University, setting numerous Division II records, including a career total of 4,693 receiving yards. The San Francisco 49ers selected Rice in the first round of the 1985 NFL draft. Rice rapidly became one of the top NFL receivers, teaming with quarterback Joe Montana to form one of the most effective passing combinations in football history. Rice and Montana led the 49ers to consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1989 and 1990, with Rice winning the most valuable player (MVP) in the 1989 title game. After Montana was traded, Rice and quarterback Steve Young paced the team to another championship in 1995. Rice signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent in 2001. After three years in Oakland the Raiders traded him to the Seattle Seahawks midway through the 2004 season, and he retired before the following season. His career totals include 1,549 receptions, 22,895 receiving yards, and 208 touchdowns-just 3 of the nearly 40 NFL records Rice held at his retirement.
