Jimmy Carter - Biography. 39th president of the United States Birth October 1, 1924 Death -- Home State Georgia Party Democrat Term In Office 1977-1981 Vice President Walter F. Mondale Significant Acts Signed the Panama Canal Treaties in 1977, agreeing to turn over administration of the canal to Panama in 1999. Facilitated the Camp David Accords in 1978, which led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Career 1946-1953 Served in U.S. Navy. 1963-1966 Served in Georgia state senate. 1971-1975 Served as Governor of Georgia. 1977-1981 President of the United States. 1982 Founded the Carter Center of Emory University, a human rights organization. Did You Know Carter has published many books, including The Little Baby Snoogle Fleejer, illustrated by his daughter, Amy. Carter pardoned draft resisters of the Vietnam War. Carter studied nuclear physics at Union College and contributed to the development of the nuclear submarine. As a young man, Carter turned his family peanut farm into a large, successful business.
