Motherhood, by definition, is the fact of becoming a mother. This topic is the main theme of the book. To Harriet and David, model couple, who founded a happy family, the arrival of the fifth child opens the time But what is becoming a mother? Becoming a mother involves, consciously or unconsciously, a desire for children. The mind plays a fundamental role in the development of a pregnancy, the child is designing both the spirit as the body. Giving birth to a child, a woman returns to her own birth to her own mother. Sometimes it takes time to integrate it into the image of this one, and allow in turn to become one. It should also give up being the girl of his own mother, to access yourself to the status of mother. The child realizes the ideal that is to say that it is the fruit of the love of a man. Wanting a child to a more conscious level, it will prolong his life and that of his parents. That continuity of a name is part of the generational history of the family is perpetuated in him. It's a way to identify with their own parents. But it also fill the gap itself. Pregnancy confirmed the woman changes status and becomes the company a pregnant woman. When she tells her companion that she is expecting a child by him, she recognizes him as father, and the same, gives a name to her baby. His arrival in the family is a true revolution, this new member will shake up the places, share roles. Parents become grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles ... Everyone feels involved, sometimes even threatened. We remember when Harriet decides to save Ben from certain death in a horrible medical center at the risk of jeopardizing the rest of the family. It is her maternal instinct takes over, it will save her child's abnormal, but still her child. Pregnancy is a special state, which will enable women to access another itself. The whole body of the mother is now devoted to work is very special to a child. Yet the presence of a living being's still wanted the presence of a stranger in her body, she has something extra. In \"The Fifth Child\" by Doris Lessing, one can clearly see the contrast between the first pregnancy and Harriet fifth. When his first pregnancy, she was a \"healthy and full of life\" (p.38) when she is pregnant with Ben, a woman \"possessed\" the pallid face, \"\" breathless \"and\" arms tight on her stomach \"(p.61) The body will change, and each woman will react differently to these changes. Some proudly display their bellies, others will see their images at risk from the body damaged, deformed, resulting in the loss of beauty. When she was pregnant with Helen, Harriet \"gently mocked his templates and cumbersome\" (p.30) Nausea, fatigue, arousal, sleep disorders are often present in the first months of pregnancy. This is a period of intense physical and psychological upheaval. The woman is investing at this time his body in different ways. All his energy is focused on developing this life that it must protect and help it grow. The embryo has given way to the fetus, this little creature comes into contact with his mother. Intense emotion that his first sensations, where the woman is really aware of this life she carries. It will follow the first sound she perceptions hear the heart beat of her child, then the first visual perceptions through ultrasound, which she visualized for the first time. Harriet feels when her child Ben in it, is that \"capacity of endurance and pain.\" She did not speak tenderly, she gives him instructions: \"Here you alone,\" \"Now leave me alone crazy or I am a stamp\" (p.63) The desire of a man and a woman was born a third desire for life, embodied in the body of a child whose growth and development become essential to their happiness. Otherwise known as parents will do everything in their power to meet its basic needs. He will forward the elements of etiquette that will enable it to integrate into society. The support to flourish in his professional and private lives. Still, the young mother through a period of often fragile psyche. Harriet said, \"that she suffered an accident\" when referring to Ben. The body has changed, bearing the marks of those nine months of pregnancy. It must give up his body accept his girl and woman's body. In addition, she feels alone in life she ran away, leaving only the gap. It runs through this period called \"baby blues\". Sensitive period, a period of mourning she will do. She feels misunderstood, wearied by so many sleepless nights, sometimes not supported by her partner. However, tenderly bending over her sleeping baby, she feels fulfilled in those moments. They are in a real fusion, they form a perfect whole. Being a mother is really meaningless at the time of birth, and refers, of course, his own mother and his own birth.
