Line Islands - geography. Line Islands, group of coral islands and atolls, central Pacific Ocean, extending 2,400 km (1,500 mi) in a northwestern to southeastern direction; total land area 680 sq km (260 sq mi). Most of the islands belong to the independent state of Kiribati; these include Teraina (Washington), Tabuaeran (Fanning), and Kiritimati (Christmas) islands (the only ones permanently inhabited), as well as Malden, Starbuck, Vostok, Millennium, and Flint islands.
