Norwegian Elkhound. Norwegian Elkhound, breed of hunting dog once thought to have originated in Norway more than 6,000 years ago. Recent genetic research has revealed that the breed was developed more recently to resemble a similar-looking ancient breed of dog. The Norwegian elkhound is noted for its ability to hunt big game such as bear and elk (especially in Norway), lynx, and raccoon. It is also used as a draft animal and is valued as a pet of unusual intelligence, friendliness, and loyalty. The breed is of medium size, with a short, strongly built body. The male is about 52 cm (about 20.5 in) high at the shoulder, the female about 50 cm (about 19.5 in); the male weighs about 25 kg (about 55 lb), the female weighs about 22 kg (about 48 lb). It has a short head; pointed ears; brown eyes; a powerful neck; a broad and deep chest; straight legs; a thick, fairly smooth coat, gray in color; and a short, curled tail that is carried high.
