What were the causes of the First World War ?The Fist World War started in 1914 and ended in 1918. It has been the most destructive war in terms of human loss. But the war didn't start suddenly, I am going to explain the reasons for such a conflict, how Europe became a cobweb, entertaining relationship and agreeing to alliances with countries, and how this cobweb caught fire.Europe on the eve of the First World War knew many clonflicts, the first Moroccan crisis for example, in 1906. France wanted to conquere Marocco with the help of Britsh (Entente Cordiale of 1904) but Germany promised to protect Marocco. France was then furious against Germany, and the British thought that Kaiser wanted to make a bigger Empire then their. In 1908, the Daily Telegraph newspaper published and interview of the Kaiser Wilhelm in wich he claimed friendship with Britain but also insult them, saying that the British were « mad » and that Germany hated them. This article, outraged the British and convinced them that Germany wanted to built a bigger Empire.Austria-Hungary annexed the Turkish state of Bosnia, in 1908 when there was a revolution in Turkey. This made Serbia furious because many Serbs stayed in Bosnia.Russia hab to support Serbia but Britain and France did not agree so Russia was humiliated.Agadir is a port in Morocco, in 1911, during a Maroccan revolution where France took over the country, Kaiser Wilhelm sent a gunboat, Panther, to the Moroccan port. France and Britain were furious against Germany who had to remove their boat and had only a small part of jungle in the Congo. The Balkan Wars during 1912 and 1913 forced the Treaty of Bucharest. Serbia became more powerful than Greece and Bulgaria and thought she could threaten Austria. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, on 28 June 1914 at Sarajevo by a Bosnian Serb set fire to Europe and led Autria-Hungary to declare war on 28 July. Russia was to support Serbia and mobilised against both Austria and Germany, wheareas Tsar Nicholas didn't want to. Germany had to fight France and Russia (Schlieffen Plan) « There was no slide to war... But a fearful set of States men and rulers making deiliberate choices. » We may observe how tension grew bigger and bigger between the countries in Europe during 1900 to 1914. Were every step to war unwitted ? I will observe some events wich may have deliberatly been ordered by rulers or States mens, this will lead me to say that deliberate choices were made but that some others weren't planned to the war.Why would Kaiser Wilhelm publish an interview in wich he will offend the British Empire, who had under its order 185 warships and 711,000 soldiers, saying that they are « mad » that Germany hates them, but, thay want to be friends. It's completly senseless. The Kaiser only wanted Britain to prepare to war. It was a message to the British to say that German Empire will rise and surpass Britain. Another deliberate choice of Germany who led to war was the gunboat Panther in Agadir, a terrible millitary choice wich resulted to bigger tension between Britain, France and Germany. Germany thought Russia would help her but at the end she figured out she would be alone. The Balkan wars in 1912 and 1913 were only for Serbia to become powerfull enough to defeat Austria-Hungary.Many actions were deliberate and caused by awfull corrupted governments, ruled in autocraties. But some other facts were independant of human choice : In those days, people were quite nationalist, wich made them think that war was a good thing if it was for their country. The Serbs were so nationalist that it led to revolutions and rebellions wich helped the outbreak of war in 1914.
