Spaniel. Spaniel, type of sporting or hunting dog, used in hunting and retrieving small game; and named for a type of toy dog popular as a pet. The basic type of nearly all spaniels originated in Spain many centuries ago and later developed in many varieties in England, Ireland, Scotland, France, and other countries. The American Kennel Club recognizes ten breeds of sporting spaniel, including the popular cocker spaniel, and one toy breed, the English toy spaniel.
