Tangent (geometry). Tangent (geometry), a line, line segment, or ray that touches a circle at one and only one point. The line is said to be tangent to the circle or is called a tangent. The line and circle must lie in the same plane. The point at which the line touches the circle is called the point of tangency, and the tangent is perpendicular to the radius of the circle that passes through the point of tangency. Lines can be tangent to curves other than circles. In three dimensions, a plane is considered tangent to a sphere or any curved surface if they intersect at only one point.
