Greek A realm of eternal darkness,
the deepest, most terrible part of the underworld,
the opposite of the dome of the sky. Tartarus was even
deeper below the Earth than Hades, farther below
Hades than the Earth was below the sky, a realm of
darkness and death. The Olympian gods exiled the
Titans to Tartarus after the great war between the
two generations of gods.
The Olympians sent other supernatural beings
there as well, such as the Cyclopes. Humans were
also sent there for punishment, including Tantalus,
Sisyphus, and the 50 daughters of Danaus, known as
the Danaides. Some poets said that evil men who had
nothing to do with the gods and their stories were
also punished in Tartarus. In later stories, the realm
was more closely associated with Hades.
