Theodore Roosevelt - biography. 26th president of the United States Birth October 27, 1858 Death January 6, 1919 Home State New York Party Republican Terms In Office 1901-1904 1905-1909 Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks Significant Acts Settled the Pennsylvania Coal Strike of 1902 after threatening U.S. Army intervention. Acquired the Panama Canal Zone in 1903 and began construction of the canal. Established the United States Forest Service in 1905 and set aside millions of acres as national forests and parks. Earned the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War. Launched the 'Great White Fleet' of American battleships, which demonstrated worldwide naval power in 1907. Career 1895 Became president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. 1897-1898 Served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. 1898 Commanded the volunteer regiment known as the 'Rough Riders' during the Spanish-American War. 1899-1901 Served as Governor of New York. 1901 Served as vice president for six months, until President William McKinley was assassinated. 1901-1909 President of the United States. 1912 Ran unsuccessfully for U.S. president, representing the Progressive, or Bull Moose, Party. 1913-1914 Explored the River of Doubt in Brazil. Did You Know Roosevelt's foreign policy was, 'Speak softly and carry a big stick.' Roosevelt was shot during a speech in the campaign of 1912. But he continued, saying, 'I will deliver this speech or die.' At age 42, Roosevelt became the youngest president in U.S. history. Roosevelt was the first president to ride in a car or fly in an airplane. Roosevelt was the first president to travel abroad while in office. He visited Panama and Puerto Rico in 1906.
