William McKinley - biography. 25th president of the United States Birth January 29, 1843 Death September 14, 1901 Home State Ohio Party Republican Term In Office 1897-1901 March 4, 1901-September 14, 1901 Vice President Garret Augustus Hobart Theodore Roosevelt Significant Acts Enacted the highest tariff in history in 1897 in an effort to protect American jobs. Oversaw the U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War (1898), which placed the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico under U.S. rule. Signed the Gold Standard Act of 1900, which made gold the basis of the U.S. currency. Sent troops to China to help put down the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. Career 1861-1865 Fought in the American Civil War. 1877-1883 and 1885-1891 Represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives. 1892-1896 Served as governor of Ohio. 1897-1901 President of the United States. Did You Know McKinley was the first presidential candidate to campaign over the telephone. McKinley was the third president to be assassinated.
