Zebra. Concerns Range Eastern and southern Africa. Habitat Savannas, plains, and mountainous areas. Size Adults grow to about 1.5 m (5 ft) at the shoulder. The largest species, Grévy's zebra, weighs up to 450 kg (990 lb). Feeding Habits Zebras are herbivores; they eat mostly grass. Offspring The female zebra typically gives birth to one foal after a gestation period of about one year. The foal nurses for about 12 months, and leaves the mother after one to three years. Life Span About 12 years in the wild. Did You Know Grévy's zebra is named for former French president Jules Grévy, who served from 1879 to 1887. Zebras may be able to recognize other zebras by the pattern of stripes on their bodies. Mountain zebras take a dust bath almost every day.
