Mapplethorpe Robert, 1946-1989, né à New York, photographe américain. Également cinéaste underground, Mapplethorpe a imposé comme photographe un style aux fortes constantes : utilisation exclusive du noir et blanc, prédominance du format carré, compositions sombres traitées en nature morte, éclairages froids, fascination pour le corps humain. Il a publié Black Males en 1980 avec un texte d'Edmund White.
