This is a landlocked country. The Elbe, via Germany, is its principal outlet to the sea.
The Czech Republic extends over the moderately hilly plateaux of Bohemia and Moravia. It is surrounded by mountains which define its territory: the Erzgebirge and Sudeten Mountains in the North, the Carpathians to the East and the Mountains of Bohemia in the South-West. The country has a continental climate. The heaviest rainfall occurs in summer.
