Guam - geography. I INTRODUCTION Fertile Pacific Soil Although Guam has rich farmland such as these fields near Umatac Bay in the southwestern part of the island, large-scale agriculture is not possible because United States military bases monopolize much of the land. Subsistence farming, however, is practiced throughout much of Guam. Explorer Ferdinand Magellan is believed to have landed at Umatac Bay in 1521, where his and later expeditions found fresh water in nearby hillside springs. Peter French/Bruce Coleman, Inc. - geography. Guam, island in the western North Pacific Ocean, unincorporated territory of the United States, largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands. It is 48 km (30 mi) long
