Languages of Northern Eurasia - geography. Overview Through the centuries, migration has shaped the linguistic geography of northern Eurasia. Scholars believe that the first Indo-European language speakers lived on the plains of southern Russia about 5,000 years ago, and from here spread these languages through their migrations. The ancestors of the Russians, who spoke a Slavic language belonging to the Indo-European family, spread eastward into European Russia around 1,500 years ago (see Europe Map Trek). About 1,300 years ago, people began a westward expansion from western Mongolia and southern Siberia, bringing with them Turkic language...
