WHAT IS
CHILD LABOUR ?
• The International labour
Organization (ILO)
characterizes child work as
work that denies offspring of
their youth, their potential
and their poise, and that is
destructive to their physical
and mental improvement..
• Any work done by children
under the age of 15 and
dangerous work done by
children under the age of 18 is
illegal.
SOWHEN DID IT BEGIN?
• Hirings children under the age of 14 and younger began
during with Industrial revolution in the 18th century.
• Child labour is not a new phenomenon to our age, it has
existed in one form or another in all historical times"
children in India have been associated with work from
time immemorial
• Literary evidence show that child labour existed in India
since 3rd century B.C.
WHY CHILD
LABOUR STILL
PREVAILS ?
•Poverty is the main reason.
Children from large
families are more likely to be at work than those from
small families, simply because the parents' income is
quite insufficient to support a large family.
•From an employer point of view, It is convenient to
employ children than adults because : low wages, can
be forced to work for long hours.
• The education provided by schools is often not
perceived by children or their parents to be a viable
alternative to work.
For many families, schooling is
simply unaffordable.
Even when it is "free" it involves
a perceived opportunity cost of the income foregone
when a child is at school rather than at work.
•Many parents still think that girls are better
prepared for adult life by sending them to work rather
than sending them to schools.
