« University of Algiers II Faculty of Foreign Languages Department of English Phonetics & Phonology First Year LMD Stress in Compound Words Compound words usually consist of two words (two components) that may be written separately, with a hyphen, or as one word.

Note that compound words written as two separate words are called « open compounds » such as credit card ; those written with a hyphen are termed « hyphenated compounds » as high-minded ; and the ones written as one word are known as « closed compounds » like lighthouse. A compound word may be a noun, an adjective or a verb made of two words (newspaper) or more like (mother-in-law).
