English literature Some writers don't hesitate criticizes their own society through their work in ex-pressing their way of thinking under the form of movie, history, poem... But many books also reveal their century, first through the type of language used but also by the story itself. In that extent we can ask ourselves how do writers reveal a society through his work ?    In a first time, we can study an extract from Scenes from London Life written by Maureen Walker.     The second extract I have chosen to illustrate this thematic is a poem named "London" by William Blake.   Indeed,   in   the   series   of   Sherlock   Holmes,   the   novelist   had   never faced his hero Jack the Ripper. From   August   7   to   September   10   in   1888,   “Jack   the   Ripper”   terrorized   the   White­chapel   district in London's East End. He killed at least five prostitutes and mutilated their bodies in   an   unusual   manner,   indicating   that   the   killer   had   knowledge   of   human   anatomy.
