Marie Curie
History :
Marie Curie, whose real name was Maria Sklodowska, was born on 7 November 1867
(eighteen sixty-seven) in Warsaw in a family of teachers.
She was brought up in a family where school was very important, so she managed to
study hard
She decided to go abroad with her sister Bronia because in Poland women could not go
to university.
She was a private teacher to win money to study,
Then Marie went to Paris and registered in sorbonne on 1891 ( eighteen ninety-one ).
In 1893 ( eighteen ninety-three ) she got a degree in physics and in 1894 ( eighteen
ninety-four ) a degree in mathematics.
sHe was then awarded a contract to measure the magnetic properties of differents
steels.
She met Pierre Curie, who was already a physicist renowned for his work on symmetry
and magnetism.
They fellt in love and married on 26 ( twenty-six ) July 1895 ( eighteen ninety-five )
She had 2 daughters.
Specific example of what she did
Henri Becquerel, the great physicist of the time, wanted to study the phenomena of
phosphorescence and fluorescence of uranium salts.
By chance, on 2 March 1886 (eighteen thousand and six), he discovered radioactivity
(from the Latin radius, ray), a word coined to describe the radiation from uranium.
In 1887 (eighteen hundred and eighty-seven), Marie concentrated on the radiation
produced by radioactivity and discovered the radioactivity of thorium.
She then
wrote a thesis entitled "Recherches sur les substances radioactives" (Research into
radioactive substances).
Uranium is a....
