From the title itself and in the first line, we know who the speaker is and who she is talking to. The speaker is a woman, she is talking to her son. From lines two to seven, the speaker says that life wasn’t easy for her. She had a lot of hardships. She used metaphors to express her feelings. We see the tension grow as the words graduate from “splinters”, to “boards torn up”, to “and places with no carpet on the floor” and to end the first thought of mind with “bare”, emptiness, nothing.
