Zadig is a young Babylonian filled full of qualities by nature. He is awesome, rich, wise and generous. He has a sincere heart, noble, fair, and moderate. He is strengthened through education, and he does not despise women. He is very optimistic, and he continues to ensure that happiness is possible. However, he will realize very quickly that he was wrong. In the beginning, Zadig was abandoned twice by his beloved Sémire and Azora. While feeling sad, he decided to change his lifestyle and devote himself to the study of science, but this change does not bring him more happiness.

While in Egypt, Zadig killed a man in self-defense and he became a slave.

While in slavery, Zadig quickly became friends and the confidant of his master Setoc by using his skills of knowledge and wisdom. However, the priests of Egypt, by using their power, condemned Zadig to death, accusing him of being involved with the abolition of an old barbaric custom.

A widow named Almona, saved him from the pyre and Zadig flees to escape death.

Afterwards, Zadig went back to Babylon to visit Queen Astarte.

Zadig learned that the King Moabdar is dead, and he found Astarte who was now a slave.

He managed to obtain her freedom and she became the queen of Babylon again.

A tournament is held and fights are taken to designate one who will be entitled to become the new king of Babylon.

Zadig wins the tournament, but suffered a new injustice; he is second on the throne.

Annoyed, he meets the angel, Jesrad, who reveals some of the mysteries of his destiny.

Zadig decides to return to the palace, and through his intelligence and speech skills, he managed to ascend the throne and marry Astarte.

Babylon becomes a prosperous city, but Zadig, marked by his adventures, wonders about the meaning of human life. The setting takes place in the middle east of Babylon in the royal palace.

However, Zadig travels during the story to Egypt, before returning to his city of Babylon.

Time indices are not very present in this story, and it seems difficult to date the exact time of this story.

In this book, the story is told in third person, and the narrator is omniscient.

The narrator seems to know all the characters of the story and also what will happen to them. Zadig is the protagonist of the story.

He had everything for him.

He is young, intelligent, educated, rich and handsome.

It seems that he does not have any defects.
