This extract is nearly in the middle of the play Hamlet. Hamlet had seen his father’s ghost and learned that his uncle had poisoned his father. Hamlet craves for revenge. Ophelia, the daughter of Polonius (a member of the Danish Privy Council) followed the orders of her father and refused the advances of Hamlet. Moreover his mother had married his uncle; which is considered as incestuous at that time, and Hamlet is strongly against that union. So Hamlet is being sad and lunatic and he is affected by procrastination, he remits the revenge of his father to an other day. His mother and his uncle are worried about those changes in Hamlet’s behaviour, they called Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, two old school fellows of Hamlet in order to find out why is he acting so strange lately and to distract him. This scene is a dialogue between Hamlet the eponymous hero of the drama, Guildenstern, Rosencrantz, Polonius and the Players who are a troop of actors coming to distract Hamlet.

« 572 ‘devil,' line 588 ‘hell,' line 573 ‘ cunning,' line 579 and ‘ revenge' line 573.

When Hamlet finally exits, there can be no doubt as to his intentions. To conclude I would say that when Shakespeare wrote that play around 1600, it was the final years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, she has no child and there were questions about who will be the next King or Queen, there was also an augmentation of theboys players troops and an evolution of the theatre.

People were interested by murder, revenge, love.

Those themes, those contexts are present in the play Hamlet; there are questions about how will be the country with the new King, and the play within the play in that scene is about revenge.

So for Shakespeare the limitations between real life and play acting are a deep question and he likes to play with the limits within his own plays.. »
