The Chef was somehow affect by McMurphy’s altitude towards the society and big
nurse.
When McMurphy convinces the Chief to organize the fishing event, away from
the big nurse, away from the oppression of the institution, he signs his name to
support him.
McMurphy tries to help the patients and even the Chef, to build their
own feelings of self-worth and confidence.
McMurphy also gets the men’s laugher,
which is another sign of freedom.
After the fishing trip, Chief starts to have an open
mind things, it becomes more clearly.
The Chef says “I could see some good in the
life around me.
McMurphy was teaching me”(p.241 ).
Even though at the end he kills
McMurphy because he is not a good example anymore, but he leaves the institution by
using McMurphy’s example and throwing the control panel through the glass window to go find
his own personal waste land.
Yet, it is not just Chief who benefits from the fishing event,
Fredrickson, Sefelt and Harding check out of the ward, George transfers to a different ward, and
Dr.
Spivey finally stands up to Nurse Ratched..
