CHAKIR Inès Première ES2 « Seats & forms of power » Hello everyone, today, i’m going to speak about the notion « Seats & forms of power », but first, let me define the topic. Power is the ability to control others and make things happen despite resistance, opposition or any kind of obstacle. It obviously leads to conflicts between those who master it and those who udergo. In order to avoid this, people have to obey to a complex system of laws and respect symbols such as specific places like courts, parliements or prisons. These can be considered as seats of power. They can also spaces like castles or even countries like the USA or China.

« Second of all, it is already known that the USA’s judicial system can be random.

The « Hot coffee » field can illustrate this.

Some citizens tend to take advantage of the legal system. To recap, Stella Liebeck, 79, spellef hot coffee on herself, got 3rd degree burns on her legs and sued McDonald’s for serving her the coffee.

She won a jury verdict of 2.9$ M, which was reduced and the case was ultimately settled.

It’s this case that gave rise to the attacks on « frivolous lawsuits », they cost billions and change the way society thinks. Thanks to reporters, those cases are immortalized with Stella Awards, a list of the most frivolous ridiculous successful lawsuits.

They are named after the senior American citizen.

The purpose is to entertain but also deeply denounce and criticize abusive lawsuits which are a drain for the country.

This may lead to a negative vision of some opportunists lawyers who only think about making profit out of situations which don’t deserve to be famous. Finally, the lawsuit over Subway « footlong » subs is a class action lawsuit whichb claims that their sandwiches weren’t really a foot long.

Though 9 customers who brought the case each got 500$ for the trouble they caused.

The fast food company agreed the case for about half a million $.

It also explains some sandwich rolls inevitably fall short due to the natural variability in the baking process.

They actually had to be 12 inches long.

This, shows how opportunists lawyers can be. In a nutshell, we can conclude that power is positively and negatively used in the USA, dependng on how it is used.

When I say positively, I mean that the purpose is to defend a cause or spread a good message.

And by negative, I talk about the abusive uses of it (how frivolous lawsuits can be), which can have serious impacts on the countries developments.. »
