The play entitled "Taking Shakespeare" is about a professor trying to help a young student, named Murph, to understand more about Shakespeare, as they are studying "Othello". The first thing I learned about Shakespeare, is that to understand him and his plays, you really need "to explore" his work. While I was reading the play, I realised that I could really identify myself with Murph, who appears as this struggling university student, desperately trying "to connect" to Shakespeare, but just can't figure out how. "Taking Shakespeare isn't about finding the answers quickly", that is what the Professor says to Murph. And in fact she is right. Reading Shakespeare and understanding it, is something that you have to do with patience...

« What we can notice , is that Shakespeare tries to open our eyes on things that we tend to overlook.

I personally think he wants us to understand the world better.

Shakespeare's work is really special: even though he lived in the 16th century, his words, and his ideas about the society, life, love, feelings...still have an effect on people, no matter which generation they are in (Romeo and Juliet for example, is one of his plays that are still celebrated today.

The idea of a man and a woman living a forbidden love is still very popular in nowadays' culture: in the movie Titanic for example, Rose and Jack fall in love although their social status does not allow them to live together.

) As Murph and the Professor are exploring "Othello", we can see that both are touched when for example they are trying to figure out more about sadness.

"Thou has not half the pow'r to do me harm/ As I have to be hurt," meaning that you are the one allowing or giving others the power to hurt you (the more they hurt you, the more you will react to it; the more you become small and vulnerable the more they have power over you and the more they can hurt you) until the moment you realise that you are being hurt and so react against it (through self control).

That is to say that if you understand the means used to hurt you if you are aware of them and restrain yourself, they won't affect you anymore, and as a result the person hurting you lost the power to do you any harm.. »
