(Force) Greek The personification of bodily
force; a demigod or lesser goddess; daughter of the
Titan Pallas and the water Nymph Styx; sister of
Nike (Victory), Cratus (Strength), and Zelus (Zeal).
When their mother sided with Zeus in his great
battle against his father, Cronus, and the Titans, Styx
brought Bia, Nike, Cratus, and Zelus into service with
her, though their father was a Titan. After that war,
the sisters and brothers, often portrayed as winged
beings, lived with Zeus and stood beside his throne,
fulfilling his commands.
With her brother Cratus, Bia received the assignment
to carry out the punishment of Prometheus, the
god who brought fire to humans. They chained him to a
rock high on a mountain and each day a vulture plucked
at his liver and each night the organ grew back.
Bia's Roman equivalent was the goddess, Vis, a
name that appears to be a mere translation.
