An ancient region of central Greece north of Attica and west of Megara and the Gulf of Corinth. The early inhabitants were from Thessaly. The city of Thebes dominated the region. Delphi, the most celebrated Oracle of antiquity, had her abode in Boeotia, on Mount Parnassus. Mount Helicon, sacred to the god Apollo, was home to the nine Muses. It was from Boeotia that the children of King Athamas fled, leading to the quest for the Golden Fleece. See Jason and the Argonauts under Jason.
