Greek An obscure, ancient divinity of
prehistoric Greece, said to be a daughter of Oceanus
and Tethys, closely associated with the cult of the god
Zeus. Scholars point out that her name is a feminine
form of the name Zeus. Homer said that she was the
mother, with Zeus, of the goddess Aphrodite, though
most sources say that Aphrodite, goddess of love and
fertility, was born from Uranus and Gaia. Dione was
venerated at Dodona as the consort of Zeus.
