(Sleep) Greek The personification of
sleep and the twin brother of Thanatos (Death); the
son of Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Darkness).
Hypnos had power over mortals and gods and
put them to sleep by sprinkling over them water
from a twig or juice from a horn. Poets, such as the
Greek Homer and the Roman Virgil, gave him more
characteristics than he has in records of religious
practices.
The Romans gave Hypnos the name Somnus as
Greek mythology influenced Roman religion.
