Roman The personification of liberty,
considered by some a goddess who protected the freedom
and liberty of Roman citizens, even from despots
and dictators, and who granted liberty to freed slaves.
A temple in honor of Libertas, built in the third
century b.c., stood on the Aventine Hill. Her profile,
with the goddess wearing a cap that signified this freedom,
was commonly featured on Roman coins during
the Roman Empire to commemorate conquests by
the Roman army and by the Roman emperors.
